How Surfboards Are Made
Foam "blanks" are stored for future customers.
Foam blanks are shaped into a specific design, shape, and weight as desired by the customer
After shaping, the foam boards are spray painted in various patterns and styles.
After spray painting, fiberglass and resin are applied along with any decals. Usually, 6 oz of fiberglass is applied on the bottom and 4-6 oz. on the deck. The more fiberglass, the heavier and more sturdy the board. Professional surfers prefer lighter boards, sacrificing durability for performance.
After the resin is dried, the fins (either removable or glassed-in) are positioned and connected.
Then the board is sanded and polished.
